Research conducted by Roads and Maritime Services reveals that most drivers thought that “low level speeding is socially acceptable”. More than half of the drivers surveyed did not think that low-range speeding was dangerous.
Men speed because they believe that they can handle it and can do it safely. They think that their skill and driving experience enabled them to speed safely.
Women speed because everyone else is; because the flow of traffic is faster than the posted speed limit; because they are in a hurry.
Whatever the justification, it is alarming that most speeding drivers have no intention of slowing down.
Speed was a contributing factor in approximately 20% of the fatalities on Australian roads in 2017. This does not include the many other people that were seriously injured and/or admitted to hospital because of speed related traffic accidents.
